Assuming that careers are “one size fits all” is a mistake. All interests and strengths are ideally suited for certain careers, and to make the mistake of overlooking that fact could result in a well-meaning, well-educated professional in the wrong job who finds himself simply miserable. If you want to find the career path that’s perfect for you, that takes into account your strengths in weaknesses, that will keep you motivated, challenged, and happy on the job… you need to do a serious evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses, and find a program that will support your efforts as you head full speed towards that career. Those things being said, could construction management be the right career for you? There are a few things we can take into consideration to determine if it is.

What Are Your Interests?

Construction management is ideally suited for individuals who gravitate towards bringing a vision to reality. Anything that might fall underneath the umbrella of that task is something a project manager might take on. As a construction manager, you’ll be responsible for overseeing projects, meeting compliance standards, coordinating with subcontractors, selecting the appropriate tools for use, meeting performance standards, sticking to a schedule, planning for emergencies, obtaining important licenses, and communicating with your team as well as the client. People who are organized, strong in leading a team, have interest in seeing tasks completed on a timeline, can handle stress well, and possess strong communication skills are ideally suited for a job in construction management. People who may not thrive in the career? Those who prefer to work alone, who like sedentary jobs, who lack communication skills and who buckle under stress.

What Are Your Professional Goals?

Are you interested in settling into a stable career that doesn’t necessarily need to go anywhere? Or are you interested in finding that career that will catapult you towards bigger and better opportunities? If the latter is true, construction management may be a great career choice for you. In construction management, advancement opportunities abound and depend on your education, experience, and quite simply how well you do your job. Set some goals, find yourself in the right career seat, and you’ll find that exceeding those goals is not difficult to do.

What Kind of Flexibility Do You Need in a Job?

Lastly, in order to determine if construction management is the right career path for you, take a good, hard look at what you’d like your work-life-balance to look like. The hard truth about construction management? It’s not exactly the most flexible job you could select, and it does come with its fair share of stress. People are depending on you to lead whenever the job requires, and in construction this is often odd hours, weekends and holidays. Deadlines must be met, and you’re the one leading the way. In this regard, finding yourself in a job you don’t love will result in stress and resentment; but on the flip side, if you love what you do, this lack of flexibility and work-life-balance really isn’t a big deal or a deal breaker.
