We hear the word “network” often, don’t we? In the non-virtual world, we network with people and co-workers to form close ties and connections that will ultimately bolster our career goals; a “network” is, more or less, a group of people with at least one common tie as it pertains to us. Virtually, a network can refer to numerous ideas, but generally speaking it refers to a group or system of interconnected people or things.
There are cell phone networks, wireless networks, television networks, and the list goes on and on. Suffice it to say, if you’re interested in a career in information technology, the role of networks will become quite prevalent in your day to day training.

When you have two or more computers connected or linked together, you have a computer network. There are several different types that can be identified before pinpointing how these networks play a role in ITI’s Information Technology College. Local area networks (LANs) are computers that are physically close together, in the same room or building. Wide area networks (WANs) are usually farther apart and are connected by resources such as telephone lines or radio waves.
Campus-area networks (CANs) are within a limited physical area, like a campus or base. Metropolitan-area networks (MANs) are data networks which are connected by a town or city. Lastly, home area networks (HANs) are networks contained within a home that connect their personal devices. What’s important about these networks, and how does that apply to Information Technology Training? Each network has a protocol which defines a common set of rules and signals for how they operate. Obviously, a career in IT isn’t a one size fits all job when you consider the number of networks and the different protocols for each one; you wouldn’t address a LAN issue in the same way that you would a WAN issue.

With what we know in this surface level information on networks (it does go much deeper in program learning), it’s easy to see that networks do pay a pivotal role in Information Technology Education. Though considered a doctor, an optometrist wouldn’t address an issue with the stomach; rather, he’d refer the patient to a gastroenterologist – also a doctor, but in a completely different network, so to speak. IT professionals may all be considered experts in the industry; their expertise will vary by network.

Obviously, one covers more network information than the other, though both do cover the basics. The programming students will have the opportunity to learn different programming languages and tools like C#, Visual Basic, .NET, ADO, ASP.net, HTML and more. In this specialty program, students will be taught Web Design, Database Development, Web application development and more. Both Networking and Programming students will have the opportunity to learn core components of the opposite specialty to complete a well rounded education – in which networks are a vital role.
